Bugiri Municipality Member of Parliament Asuman Basalirwa says it has come to their notice that the US embassy in Uganda has revoked Speaker of Parliament Anita Among’s visa.

Basalirwa made the revelations while addressing the media over the new Anti-Homosexuality Act on Monday, May 29, 2023, at Member’s Lounge at Parliament.
The revelation comes just hours after President Yoweri Museveni signed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law.
However, it remains unclear whether the move by the embassy had to do with Among’s role in the formulation and subsequent passing of the Bill, which is now an Act in Uganda.
Tuesday Morning in the USA, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States may consider more restriction of visas for some Ugandan officials after the country adopted one of the world’s toughest anti-LGBTQ laws.

Blinken said the US was “deeply troubled” by Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, which was signed into law by President Yoweri Museveni on Monday.
While same-sex relations were already illegal in Uganda, the new law imposes capital punishment for some behaviours including “aggravated homosexuality”, and 20 years in prison for “promoting” homosexuality.
US President Joe Biden quickly condemned the law as “a tragic violation of universal human rights” and threatened to cut aid and investment to the East African country.
He urged Uganda to repeal the measure, and in a statement later, Blinken said the US would “consider deploying existing visa restrictions tools against Ugandan officials and other individuals for abuse of universal human rights, including the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons.”
The European Union, United Kingdom, UNAIDS, the Global Fund, human rights groups and LGBTQ organisations also expressed their shock at the adoption of the new law by Uganda.
