Akena reportedly shot himself dead at around 10am using a gun assigned to him to guard the bank over unknown reasons.
According to his colleagues, the deceased made a phone call before walking behind the bank building where he shot himself in the chin and died on the spot.
Jane Francis Okilli, the Gulu Resident City Commissioner (RCC), who visited the scene, said the incident is being investigated.
Over the years, police have registered many incidents where security guards have either taken their own lives or used deadly force in various parts of Uganda.
There have been several calls for private security agencies to conduct comprehensive pre-employment psychological testing, as depression and anxiety alone affect a staggering one in four citizens in Uganda.
Data from 2020 and 2022 show that Uganda is ranked among the top six African countries in rates of depressive disorders and has the second-highest suicide rate among East African males ages 18-35.
